Dave Howard - Ivanhoe Club Member 1951 to 2004 and Life Member
Dave Howard first played cricket
for the Ives in 1951, joining with to future stalwarts of the club, Stan Phipps,
Geoff Callow and Dave Annelly. Having injured
his knee 1953 and being being unable to bowl Dave successfully kept wicket from
1954 to 1957 with the occasional few overs in1956 & 1957. Dave also joined
the football section playing centre half for the first team for number of season.
Dave was a keen supporter to
the annual cricket tour to Oxford and was well known for his habit of being
first into the hotel to try and bag the best room and
was classed as one of the young tearaways of the tour for many years. Dave's
wife Marlene also went on the tours and was the official scorer and main critic
of the team as reported in the tour reports of the time.
Having being elected to the
high office of Gear Officer in 1959 Dave was elected Vice Captain 1962 and then
Captain in1964 taking over from Ted Woolley,
a position held until 1982 when Peter Munting who also played football and cricket
for the club took over. Dave played on until 1991 having played for the
Ives for 41 years.
From 1991 to 1997 he held the
position of Chairman of the club retaining an active interest in the clubs progress.
Dave was then elected Club President in
1997 a position he held until 2004 to complete 50 years of involvement
with Ivanhoe. Dave remains a life member of the club today.
As can be seen below although
Dave made a slow start to his Ive's career he eventually scored nearly 11000
runs, including the club record of 131 not out
which still stands today and took 546 wickets at an average of 17.27.
